A note was propped on the kitchen counter.

Lasagna in the fridge (Mom’s recipe), and salad (I know you’re not eating right!)

See ya later,

Paul(ie)

I smiled a little and tossed the note in my recycle bin. Even though I wasn’t particularly hungry, I pulled out the lasagna to stick in the microwave.

While it heated, I texted Kate, asking about amnesia after a blow to the head.

Most definitely, she texted back. Depending on how bad the concussion was, the last ten minutes to as much as a few hours, or even a whole day, might not have been processed. Some parts will come back but usually not the last minute or so before the blow.

But he remembers being hit on the head? I typed into my phone, disappointed that she hadn’t called instead of continuing to text. That meant she was in the middle of something and couldn’t talk.

Unlikely, she responded. His mind probably filled in that gap with a logical assumption. There isn’t sufficient time for the memory of the last few seconds to be processed and stored, before the brain cells are scrambled.

I nodded to myself. Made sense.

I texted, How about after the concussion? He lost twenty to thirty minutes, but it came back later.

Could be from the concussion, or psychological, if he's blocking out trauma.

Yeah, I thought, I'd consider finding a dying man next to me as traumatic.

Thanks, I texted, really helpful.

Great. Talk soon!

Definitely.

I was feeling a bit lighter as the microwave dinged. My stomach rumbled, suddenly hungry.
